Rotation and Inventory
I find it helpful to plan ahead about the basic staples that will be in my food storage. Thinking about our current eating habits, I determine how many pounds or servings our family will eat in one year. As long I keep these foods in a cool, clean, dark, and dry place, they will stay good for one year without special packaging.
I purchase the buckets and jars needed and designate shelf space for these items. Once established, I maintain my inventory with the FIRST IN FIRST OUT method of rotation. The containers are numbered, and then opened in numerical order to rotate and maintain freshness. If additional items are needed for a long term food storage plan, I will package these items for long-term storage. Depending on shelf life, these items can be worked into the rotation every 5-10 years and replaced with new products. |
